Paralegal Education and Paralegal Training - Focus While Pursuing Paralegal Education

It is often felt in most college programs that you should always achieve good grades. I will not argue with this train of thought because it is always a positive notion to graduate from college with honors. It looks remarkable on a resume’ and shows that you have resolve. What most do not realize, however, that college is about adaptation.

The legal community is ever changing. It has been said that the greatest thing this countries founding fathers realized is that they did not know everything. This is why they did not set laws in stone. Because there are no stone tablets, laws are enforced and written by interpretation, not just the words written. For this reason, any person practicing in the legal profession (including paralegals) needs to be able to think ‘outside the box’. Paralegals need to be versatile.

This is not a ticket to make bad grades, however, just because a student does not begin strong does not mean they will not become a good paralegal. What many corporate businesses seek (when they request your college transcript) is how you improved or adapted to circumstances. For example:

If you ended your first semester in college with a 2.3 GPA (a C or C- in past grading systems) but ended your program with a 3.5 GPA, this shows good character. This indicates that it was difficult in the beginning, however, instead of giving up, you buckled down and worked hard to persevere. This is viewed much better than a student beginning with a 3.9 GPA and ending with a 3.5 GPA. Sure, the GPA is the same, however, one moves upward and the other declined.

Legal litigation is a constant battle. Since our laws are not etched in stone, the successor on paper and in the courtroom depends upon the one advocate that can express herself/himself adequately. You must be able to ‘out-think’ your opponent, not rest upon your laurels. Sometimes the better argument will trump the written word. The great thing about the law is that the law can be changed and it takes people with perseverance to make that happen.
