Paralegal Education and Paralegal Training - Becoming a Paralegal
Who can become a paralegal? Anyone can become a paralegal. Becoming a paralegal only takes a choice in career direction. To become a good paralegal, however, takes studying and hard work. The first thing to be considered is the correct school. Here are some things to consider when choosing a school.
1. Find out about the school’s paralegal program.
There are technical colleges that offer paralegal certificates. These schools normally concentrate on the basics of paralegal study. A paralegal certificate will give the student a good foundation of the legal atmosphere and the knowledge needed to understand and pursue litigation. There are also colleges that offer a two-year, Associates in Applied Science degree, in paralegal studies. Unlike the technical colleges, the student must take general courses as well as the paralegal studies. Furthermore, some colleges offer Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, which are obtained as any other bachelor’s degree. All of these programs will prepare you to understand the legal community.
The level of education a person should seek depends upon the type of law a person wishes to be employed. Take the following into consideration:
a. Most corporate businesses and large corporate defense law firms desire paralegals with a four-year degree. Reason: Defense firms and Corporate Lawyers depend upon paralegals to follow strict guidelines regarding discovery and litigation. The function of a paralegal in this atmosphere is to keep the attorneys abreast of what is going on in the case, not necessarily to practice it.
